Solid Surface Countertop Maintenance

Overview:

Solid surface countertops are very popular in RVs. They are very durable and attactive looking compared to laminate based products. There are a number of brands available but the following information is recommended by the makers of the Corian brand of products:

Basic Care:

  • All Corian sinks have the matte finish
  • Soapy water or ammonia-based cleaners will remove most dirt and stains from all types of finishes
  • However, slightly different techniques must be used to remove difficult stains, depending on the finish. Follow the recommendations in the chart on the following page to properly care for your finish type.

COUNTERTOPS

Finish

Matte/satin

Semi-gloss

High-gloss

Cleaning

  Most Dirt and Stains

Use soapy water or ammonia based cleaner

  Water Marks

Wipe with damp cloth and towel dry

  Difficult stains

Use an abrasive cleaner and a green Scotch-Brite* pad

Use Soft Scrub* or diluted bleach and a white Scotch-Brite* pad.

Follow procedure for semi-gloss, but use a sponge instead of a Scotch-Brite* pad, or use white polishing compound.

Disinfecting

Occasionally wipe surface with diluted household bleach (1 part water/ 1 part bleach)

Maintenance

Rub with Scotch-Brite* pad alone

Enhance shine with nonabrasive polish, such as Hope's Countertop Polish**

Refinish:

Here is what you need to do to refinish your Corian countertops, depending on the type of finish:

MATTE FINISH

Dry-sand with 180 or 220 grit fine sandpaper until cuts or scratches are gone.

Restore finish with an abrasive cleanser and a green Scotch-Brite pad of a Soft Scour pad.

Wipe with a damp cloth, then with a dry towel.

SEMI-GLOSS FINISH

Dry-sand with 400-grit sandpaper until cuts or scratches are gone.

Restore finish with a non-abrasive cleanser and a white Scotch-Brite pad or a Soft Scour pad.

Wipe with a damp cloth, then with a dry towel.

HIGH GLOSS FINISH

Dry-sand with 400-grit sandpaper until cuts or scratches are gone.

Wipe the surface and continue with 600-grit sandpaper.

Wipe the surface, then buff using white polishing compound and a low-speed (1500 - 2000 rpm) polisher equipped with a wool pad.

Finish with a countertop wax.
